Hawaii comprises 137 islands of which the eight main ones are Kauai, Kahoolawe, Lanai, Maui, Molokai, Niihau, Oahu and the island of Hawaii itself. The capital, Honolulu, is located on the island of Oahu. Hawaii is the most recently added of the fifty United States of America. Located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, this state has retained its own culture, but also shows significant American and Asian influences. The archipelago has a permanent population of more than a million residents in a surface area of 16 760 km². Hawaii is the only State not located on the American continent and also the furthest south. The archipelago offers a breath-taking diversity of landscapes, notably thanks to its large volcanoes: Hualalai, Kīlauea, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Mauna Ulu. Hawaii has many natural parks including the National Volcano Park and the Haleakala National Park. Since June 2006, the north-western islands of Hawaii are recognised as a national monument. You can visit them and appreciate the unbelievable landscapes laid out before your eyes: cliffs, exuberant jungles, paradisiacal beaches, immense volcanoes… And take the time to visit Honolulu to see the Lolani Palace built in the XIXth century. A rainy day? Head for the gigantic Oahu aquarium! Or if you just want to laze around, the Waikiki beach is like a restful corner of paradise.
If there was just one activity possible in Hawaii, it would be surfing. On the island of Maui, and more precisely at Peahi, during a heavy swell, the waves can reach more than 25 metres high, making them the highest in the world. Although they are reserved for professionals, these waves shouldn't discourage amateur surfers who will find plenty of other suitable locations in Hawaii. If you prefer quieter activities, you can try your hand at body boarding or underwater diving. For a different way to visit the island, you could try hiking or on horseback. You can even enjoy the luxury of a round of golf in these remarkable surroundings.
Hawaii uses the American dollar. You can change your money on the island, but we would recommend doing so before you leave. Don't forget that the inhabitants speak English with a very strong American accent. You can visit Hawaii all year round, but most tourists prefer winter, to make the most of the sun. An excellent way to get warm, thanks to regular Air France flights.
